Why I Choose Essential Oils — A Personal Reflection
Every ingredient in a Misneach product is chosen on purpose. Essential oils aren’t just part of what I make — they’re at the heart of it. Here’s why.
When I first started making candles and aromatherapy products from my kitchen in Wiltshire, the question I was asked most often wasn’t about the wax, the vessels or the scents. It was much simpler.
Why essential oils?
It’s a fair question. There are cheaper alternatives. Synthetic fragrances are easier to work with, more consistent batch to batch, and available in almost any scent imaginable. So why go to the extra effort of working with essential oils instead?
The honest answer is that I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way.
What Essential Oils Actually Are
Essential oils are the natural aromatic compounds found within plants — extracted from flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resins and fruit peel through processes like steam distillation or cold pressing. They’re the part of the plant that carries its scent, and often its most distinctive characteristics.
When you smell lavender in a Misneach candle, you’re smelling the same compound found in a lavender field. Nothing has been created in a laboratory to imitate it. It’s simply the plant, concentrated.
That matters — not just philosophically, but in practice.
The Difference You Can Actually Feel
Synthetic fragrances are designed to smell like something. Essential oils are something.
There’s a warmth and depth to a room scented with pure essential oils that synthetic alternatives rarely replicate. It’s harder to describe than to experience — less sharp, less uniform, more like stepping into a kitchen where something real is being made rather than walking past a candle shop on the high street.
Beyond the scent itself, essential oils have been used for centuries in traditional wellness practices across cultures worldwide. Lavender to soothe. Eucalyptus to refresh. Frankincense to ground. Ylang ylang to uplift. These associations aren’t marketing — they’re part of a long, genuine relationship between people and plants.
When someone lights a Misneach candle at the end of the day, I want that ritual to mean something. I want the scent to genuinely change how the room feels — and how they feel in it. Essential oils make that possible in a way synthetic alternatives simply don’t.
Honesty About Ingredients
Something I feel strongly about is knowing exactly what goes into everything I make — and being able to tell you exactly what that is.
Essential oils are transparent ingredients. Each one comes from a named plant, a named part of that plant and a named place of origin. When I work with a new supplier, I ask for their IFRA certificates and their safety data. I know what I’m using and why.
Many people who buy Misneach products care deeply about what they bring into their homes. They read labels. They choose locally made things. They care about ingredients — in their food, in their skincare and in what they burn in their living rooms.
They deserve to know exactly what that is.
The Blending Process
One of the things I love most about working with essential oils is that blending them is genuinely creative.
Each oil has what perfumers call a note — top notes are the first thing you smell, sharp and bright and quick to fade. Middle notes form the heart of the blend. Base notes are the slow, deep ones that linger long after the candle has been blown out.
Creating a Misneach blend means thinking about all three — what you smell when you first light the candle, what it settles into after a few minutes, and what lingers in the room afterwards. It takes time and many small adjustments to get that balance right.
It’s not a process you can rush. And that’s exactly how I like it.
Small Batches, On Purpose
Every Misneach product is made in small batches. This isn’t just a marketing phrase — it’s a direct consequence of working with essential oils.
Pure essential oils are sensitive. Temperature, light, air and time all affect them. Working in small quantities means every batch is fresh, properly blended and poured with care.
Scaling up and cutting corners would be easy. But it would change everything about what Misneach is.
Why It Will Always Be This Way
I started Misneach because I genuinely believe that natural ingredients — made with care and used with intention — can change how a space feels. And how you feel in it.
Essential oils are the most direct expression of that belief. They connect what I make to something older and more honest than a production line. They make every product something worth pausing for.
That’s why Misneach chose essential oils. And it’s why that will never change.
